This issue of Innovations focuses on the role of participation in the life of the school, on listening, and on learning as a process of individual and group construction, three of the educational principles from Indications: Preschools and Infant Toddler Centres of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia. Chiara Spaggiari from Reggio Emilia begins by sharing her reflections about listening. In “Teachers are Essential to Democracy”, Harold Gothson from Sweden writes about the value of democracy in education.

A very engaging story of community involvement and response to a hurricane is written by Jeanne Goldhaber and Amanda Ferguson in "Focusing on the Future: Bread for Irene." This story of children baking bread to sell to raise money for a community farm the children knew is a heartwarming example of a school community supporting others. This issue also introduces the new peer-reviewed issue of Innovations that will be published.
