This issue of Innovations focuses on the value of educational research in early childhood education. It begins with the article “Educational Research and Professional Development: An Existential, Ethical Approach Necessary for Interpreting the Complexity of Life and Educational Experiences,” by Deanna Margini, pedagogista from Reggio Emilia. The next article captures the history of Sabot at Stony Point, a school in Richmond, Virginia, written by three educators from the school. They write about the value of teacher research, continuity, intersubjectivity, and studio thinking.

The issue includes a very special collection of tributes to an honorary citizen of Reggio Emilia, Jerome Bruner, in “Remembering Jerome Bruner,” who passed away in June 2016. Authors included Howard Gardner, Lella Gandini, Margie Cooper, Mayor Luca Vecchi, and Lillian Katz. In the “Perspectives on NAREA” column Margie Cooper, standing chair of NAREA, writes about the 10-year anniversary celebration for the Loris Malaguzzi International Center. Patty Randall shares a summary of the 2016 NAREA Summer Conference, “Engaging Children, Families, and Educators in a Spiral of Learning: Embracing Openness and Uncertainty.” In the “Voices: Conversations from North America and Beyond” column, Edna Hussey, principal in Honolulu, HI, and Gretchen Reynolds, retired faculty member at Algonquin College in Ottawa, ON, offer their reflections on and inspirations from the Twelfth NAREA Summer Conference.
