In this issue, we have the opportunity, thanks to Reggio Children and Routledge, to consider Malaguzzi’s thoughts, his ways of connecting, and his originality through the words he spoke during a professional development workshop with staff in 1988.

Paola Cagliari, director of Preschools and Infant-toddler Centres – Istituzione of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, Italy, offers a context to Malaguzzi’s remarks. In particular, her comments highlight the generative style of staff development crafted by Malaguzzi, the pedagogical coordinating team, and the teachers.

Within this dynamic, the role of the teachers is defined as being constructors of the educational project, on the level of both theories and practices, and this fueled a sense of belonging that is still today the driving force of the Reggio experiences and of its qualities (p. 4).
